There’s nothing worse than buying a selection of our meats only to find that they’ve gone bad a few days later. If you want to keep your meats as fresh as possible, there are several things you can do to ensure they’re good whenever you want to throw some on the grill or include them in a new recipe.
When you put your meats in the refrigerator, always make sure that they are well-wrapped and placed on the bottom shelf. This will prevent them from touching or dripping on other foods.
Once you purchase your meats, plan to use them within two to three days. If you don’t get around to using your meat within this time-frame, put it in your freezer. When you prepare your meat for the freezer, wrap it twice in plastic wrap, if it isn’t already wrapped, and then label it with what day you’re putting it in your freezer. Typically, your meat will last in the freezer for about three months. To avoid forgetting about your meat, keep a general log of what you have in your freezer. If you purchase meat that is vacuum sealed, then it is usually good for one year in a good-quality freezer.
Once it’s time to use your meat from the freezer, it is important that you thaw it properly. To thaw meat, place it on a plate or large dish and then place it on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator. Do not ever thaw your meat at room temperature, as this could raise your risk for food poisoning.
